What Is A Slide Release For A Shotgun?

With pump action shotguns like the Rem 870 and Mossberg 500 they lock forward if no rounds are present in the gun I believe, my 500 locks forward and has a small catch on the side of the trigger guard which releases the fore end slide to come back. The...
