Goose Hunting

Big waterfowl hunting with decoys and calling

Fall & winter migratory seasons
Steel shot required nationwide
Conservation Order for snow geese

Season Framework

Goose seasons are governed by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 and managed through federal frameworks. Each flyway sets seasons within these outside limits.

The federal framework allows earliest opening September 1 and latest closing March 10. Maximum season length is typically 95-107 days depending on species and flyway.

Seasons and bag limits change annually - always verify current regulations with your state wildlife agency.

Special Canada Goose Seasons

Many states offer special early seasons targeting resident Canada geese before regular waterfowl seasons open.

Early Season Features

  • Timing: Available September 1-30 in Atlantic, Central, Mississippi Flyways
  • Purpose: Target local/resident birds before migrants arrive
  • Restrictions: Canada geese only when other waterfowl seasons closed
  • Days: May add to regular season up to 107-day maximum

Light Goose Conservation Order

Due to overabundant populations causing Arctic habitat damage, special Conservation Orders allow expanded hunting of snow and Ross's geese.

Conservation Order Provisions

  • No bag limits - No daily or possession limits
  • Electronic calls - Permitted (normally prohibited)
  • Unplugged shotguns - No 3-shell limit
  • Extended hours - ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset
  • Timing: February through May (varies by state)
  • No Duck Stamp required in most states

Bag Limits Structure

Goose limits are typically set by flyway and population status. Dark and light geese have separate limits.

Typical Framework Limits

  • Dark Geese: 3-5 daily, depending on flyway and species
  • Canada/Cackling: Often combined with dark goose limit
  • White-fronted: 1-3 depending on population status
  • Brant: 2 in most areas, restrictive in Atlantic Flyway
  • Light Geese: 20+ daily during regular season

Possession limit typically 3x daily bag. Always check current regulations.

  • State Hunting License - Basic hunting credentials
  • Federal Duck Stamp - Required for waterfowl hunters ($25)
  • State Waterfowl Stamp - Most states require additional stamp

Duck Stamp Conservation

  • Established March 16, 1934 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt
