About Goose Hunting

Goose hunting is a challenging pursuit that combines scouting, decoy strategy, calling skills, and marksmanship. These large, intelligent waterfowl require more specialized techniques than duck hunting, with field hunting over decoys being the primary method.

The sport has grown tremendously as Canada goose populations have expanded, while conservation efforts for overabundant snow geese have created unique hunting opportunities through special Light Goose Conservation Orders.

Whether pursuing resident Canada geese in local fields or chasing migrating snow geese along the flyways, goose hunting offers some of waterfowling's most exciting moments when a flock commits to your decoys.

Why Hunt Geese

Goose breast rivals beef steak for flavor and versatility

Common Species

North American goose species are managed as "dark geese" (Canada, cackling, white-fronted, brant) and "light geese" (snow, Ross's) with different regulations for each group.

Dark Geese

  • Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) - 5-14 lbs, 7 subspecies, most popular target
  • Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii) - Smaller, recently split from Canada
  • Greater White-fronted (Anser albifrons) - "Specklebelly," distinctive belly bars
  • Brant (Branta bernicla) - Small coastal goose, Atlantic & Pacific subspecies

Light Geese

  • Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens) - White & blue morphs, overabundant
  • Ross's Goose (Anser rossii) - Smallest white goose, lacks "grinning patch"

The Four Flyways

Geese migrate along four major administrative flyways, each managed separately for regulations and harvest.

  • Atlantic Flyway: 17 eastern states. Atlantic population Canada geese, brant
  • Mississippi Flyway: 14 central states, handles ~40% of all migrating waterfowl
  • Central Flyway: Largest by land area, Great Plains. Major snow goose route
  • Pacific Flyway: Rocky Mountains to Pacific. White-fronted geese, cacklers
