Just bought my first shotgun - what's a good all-around load for trap and sporting clays?
Hey everyone, I'm brand new to shooting and just picked up a used Beretta A300 Outlander 12-gauge. I've been to the range twice with some cheap Walmart shells and my patterns are all over the place. I'm planning to shoot mostly trap and maybe some sporting clays with friends. What should I be looking for in terms of shot size and velocity?

Welcome to the sport! For your A300, you can't go wrong with #7.5 or #8 shot at around 1200-1250 fps - Federal Top Gun or Winchester AA are great starter loads that pattern well in most guns. Since you're doing trap and sporting, I'd stick with a modified choke to start - it gives you decent reach for 16-yard trap but still enough spread for closer sporting targets. What choke are you running now, and are you shooting from the 16 or 25 yard line for trap? That'll help narrow down the best load for your specific setup.
