Just got a used Remington 870 for clays - what choke and shells should I start with?
Hey all, new shooter here. Picked up a used Remington 870 Express 12 gauge for trap and skeet. It came with a modified choke tube installed. I've been to the range twice and my pattern seems really tight at 16 yards - I'm missing a lot of easy shots. Should I switch to an improved cylinder choke? And what's a good budget shell for practice?

Welcome to the sport! That 870 is a great starter gun - I still have mine from 20 years ago. For trap, that modified choke is actually perfect for 16-yard singles. The tight pattern might be more about your mount or follow-through. Try some Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 shot at 1200fps - they're reliable and won't break the bank. What's your lead looking like on those misses? Sometimes new shooters stop their swing when they pull the trigger.
