Just got my first shotgun - a Mossberg 500 - and feeling overwhelmed about where to start

Picked up a Mossberg 500 12-gauge with a 28" barrel after saving up for months. I've shot a friend's gun once at a range, but now that I own one, I'm not sure what to do next. Should I join a club, take a class, or just go to a public range? I'm in the suburbs of Chicago if that helps.

Welcome to the sport! That Mossberg 500 is a solid first gun - I started with one too. For Chicago suburbs, I'd recommend checking out the Aurora Sportsmen's Club or the Northbrook Sports Club. They both have great beginner programs. Honestly, I'd start with a basic shotgun safety class before anything else - most clubs offer them. What choke tube came with your Mossberg? That'll help determine what loads to start with for clays.
