Just got a used Remington 870 for clays - what shells should I start with?

Hey all, brand new shooter here. Picked up a used Remington 870 Express 12 gauge for trap shooting at my local club. I've only shot it once with some old Winchester target loads a buddy gave me. What's a good, affordable shell to practice with? I'm shooting at 16 yards for now.

Welcome to the sport! For your 870, you can't go wrong with Federal Top Gun or Winchester AA target loads in 7.5 or 8 shot. They're around $8-9 a box and run reliably in pumps. Start with 1-1/8 oz at 1200 fps - that's plenty for 16 yard trap. What choke are you using? Modified is a good starting point for beginners. Once you get comfortable, we can talk about stepping up to 1 oz loads to save your shoulder on longer practice days.
