Anyone else feel like they're overthinking their lead on crossing targets at 40+ yards?

Been shooting sporting clays for about 8 years now, mostly with my Browning Citori 725. Lately, I've been struggling with those long crossers on stations 7 and 8 at my local club. I'm using a Modified choke with Federal Gold Medal 1-1/8 oz #8 shot at 1200 fps, and I swear I'm putting the bead where it should be, but I'm getting more dust than solid breaks. I've tried everything from sustained lead to pull-through, but my consistency is just gone.

Man, I've been there. Those long crossers can mess with your head. First thing I'd check is your choke - for 40+ yard targets, you might want to tighten up to an Improved Modified or even a Full. That Federal load is solid, but at that distance, you need a denser pattern. Also, on those stations, I've found that most people (myself included) actually under-lead more than they think. Try adding another foot or two of lead and see if that helps. What's your follow-through like after the shot?
