My reloads for sporting clays are inconsistent - patterns seem to change shot to shot

I've been reloading for about 2 years on a MEC 9000G, mostly for my Beretta A400 Xcel. Using once-fired STS hulls, Federal 209 primers, 18.0 grains of Alliant Extra-Lite, Claybuster wads, and 1 oz of #8 lead. At 40 yards, some patterns look great, others have holes you could drive a truck through. I'm weighing powder and shot charges on a digital scale.

That's a classic symptom of wad seating pressure inconsistency. The MEC 9000G's wad seating station can be finicky - make sure your wad guide fingers are adjusted properly and not worn. I switched to a Ponsness Warren 800B for my target loads and my patterns tightened up noticeably. Also, check your crimp depth - inconsistent crimps will affect how the wad releases. What's your crimp look like - nice and flat or does it vary?
