Trying to fine-tune my 1-1/8 oz reloads for sporting clays - getting inconsistent patterns at 40 yards
Been working up some 12ga reloads for my Browning Citori CX with a Modified choke. Using once-fired STS hulls, WAA12SL wads, 18.0 grains of Alliant Extra-Lite, and #8 lead shot. Patterns look great at 30 yards but start getting 'donut holes' at 40 yards on longer crossers. Anyone else run into this with light target loads?

I've seen that exact issue with Extra-Lite in STS hulls - that powder tends to burn a bit fast for heavier shot charges at longer ranges. Try switching to Hodgdon Clays at around 18.5 grains or bump up to 19.0 grains of International. The slightly slower burn gives better shot column integrity. Also, check your wad fit - sometimes those WAA12SLs can let the shot shift during acceleration. What's your crimp looking like - getting good folds?
