Trying to fine-tune my 1-1/8 oz reloads for sporting clays - getting inconsistent patterns at 40 yards
I've been working up a load for my Beretta 686 with a Modified choke using once-fired STS hulls, WAA12 wads, and 18.0 grains of Alliant Extra-Lite. My patterns are great at 30 yards but start to get a bit 'blown' and inconsistent at 40. I'm using #8 lead shot. Anyone else run into this with lighter target loads?

I've seen that exact issue before. Extra-Lite can be a bit fast for 1-1/8 oz loads - you might be getting some pellet deformation. Try backing down to 17.0 grains or switching to a slightly slower powder like Hodgdon Clays at 17.5 grains. Also, make sure your wad column is consistent; sometimes those WAA12s need a bit more crimp pressure. What's your current velocity reading on those loads?
