Trying to fine-tune my 1-1/8 oz reloads for sporting clays - getting inconsistent patterns at 40 yards

Been working up some reloads for my Beretta 686 with 28" barrels and Briley extended chokes (IC and Mod). Using once-fired STS hulls, WAA12SL wads, 18.0 grains of Alliant Extra-Lite, and #8 lead shot. Patterns look great at 30 yards but really open up and get patchy at 40. Anyone else run into this with Extra-Lite?

I've had similar issues with Extra-Lite when pushing 1-1/8 oz loads. That powder really likes lighter payloads - try dropping to 1 oz or even 7/8 oz and see if your patterns tighten up. Also, check your wad fit in those STS hulls; sometimes the WAA12SL can be a hair loose, causing shot deformation. What choke are you using at 40 yards? Might need to go tighter than Mod for that distance with that load.
