Just got a used Remington 870, what's the first thing I should check?

Picked up a used 870 Wingmaster for my first shotgun. It looks clean, but I'm not sure what to look for before taking it to the range. I've got some Federal Top Gun target loads to start with. What should I be checking for safety and function?

Great choice for a first gun - those 870s are tanks. First thing I'd do is field strip it (YouTube has good tutorials if you're not sure). Check the chamber and barrel for any pitting or obstructions, and make sure the action cycles smoothly. Give the magazine tube a good cleaning too - old grease can gum up. Does it have the original choke tube in it, or did it come with any others?
