My GSP is breaking point too early on pheasants

Been hunting with my 2-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer for two seasons now. He's solid on quail and holds point well, but on wild pheasants he'll lock up at about 30 yards out, then creep in and flush them before I can get in position. I'm shooting a Beretta A400 Xcel with an IC choke using Federal Premium 1-1/4oz #5s at 1350fps. Anyone else deal with this?

Classic problem with young pointers on running birds. Pheasants are notorious for holding tight then running, and your dog is reading that pressure. Try planting some pen-raised birds in heavy cover where they'll hold better - it'll build his confidence. Also consider switching to a tighter choke (maybe Mod) since you're getting those longer flushes. How's his obedience on whoa commands from a distance?
