My GSP keeps breaking point too early on pheasants
I've been working with my 2-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer for about a year now. We hunt mostly wild pheasants in South Dakota, and he's got a great nose and finds birds consistently. Problem is, he'll lock up on point from like 30 yards out, but then he'll creep forward and flush the bird before I can get within 20 yards. I'm using a Beretta A400 with an improved cylinder choke and Federal Prairie Storm 3" #5s. I've tried the 'whoa' command and check cord work, but he still gets too excited when he knows the bird is right there.

That's a super common issue with young pointers - they get birdy and just can't help themselves. What worked for my English Setter was using a remote collar on the lowest stim setting (I use a Dogtra 280C) and giving a nick the moment he even thinks about creeping. Don't wait until he actually moves - anticipate it. Also, try planting some pen-raised birds and work on getting him steady to wing and shot before you take him hunting again. It's all about building that self-control. How's he do on planted birds versus wild ones?
