My GSP is breaking point too early on pheasants - anyone else deal with this?

Been working my 2-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer on wild pheasants this season and he's breaking point way too soon. He'll lock up solid at 20-30 yards, but then creep or even bust the birds before I can get in position. I'm shooting a Beretta A400 Xcel with IC choke and Federal Prairie Storm 3" #5s. We've done yard work on whoa and he's steady on planted birds, but wild birds are a different story.

That's a super common issue with young pointers on wild birds - the excitement just gets to them. What worked for my English Setter was using a check cord and letting him point, then walking up and gently stepping on the cord if he started to creep. Keep him on the cord until you flush the bird yourself. Also, try switching to a tighter choke like Modified - gives you a little more reach if he does bust them early. How's he doing on recall when he breaks?
