My new lab puppy won't bring the dummy back, just runs around with it

Just got my first bird dog, an 8-week-old black Lab. I've been trying to introduce retrieving with a canvas dummy in the yard, but he grabs it and runs off to play keep-away instead of bringing it to hand. I'm using a 20-foot check cord and trying to keep it fun, but I'm worried I'm creating bad habits. My setup is just basic backyard training with no e-collar yet.

Totally normal puppy behavior! Labs are mouthy and playful at that age. Instead of chasing him (which turns it into a game), try sitting down and calling him enthusiastically - when he comes, gently take the dummy while praising, then immediately throw it again. The key is making coming to you more rewarding than running off. Some trainers use two identical dummies - throw one, when he picks it up, show the second one to lure him back. What kind of dummy are you using? Sometimes switching to a smaller, softer bumper can help with young pups.
