My new Lab puppy won't bring the dummy back consistently
Just got my first hunting dog, an 8-week-old black Lab. I'm trying to introduce him to retrieving with a canvas dummy in the backyard. He'll chase it when I throw it, but half the time he just sniffs it and walks away instead of picking it up. I'm using a 12ga Beretta A300 for clays but haven't hunted with him yet.

Totally normal for a pup that age - don't sweat it! At 8 weeks, you're just building positive associations. Try making the dummy more exciting by rubbing it with a pheasant wing or putting a little peanut butter on it. Keep sessions super short (5 minutes max) and always end on a high note when he does bring it back. What kind of dummy are you using - canvas or plastic?
