My new lab pup won't bring back the dummy - just runs around with it

Got my first bird dog, a 10-week-old black Lab. Trying to start with basic retrieving using a canvas dummy in the yard. He'll chase it when I toss it, but then he just prances around with it in his mouth instead of bringing it back to me. I've tried calling him excitedly and running away to make it a game, but no luck. Using a 20-foot check cord.

Totally normal at that age - you're dealing with the 'keep away' phase. What worked for my last Lab was using a hallway or narrow space so he literally can't run around you. Toss the dummy just a few feet, let him pick it up, then gently reel him in with the check cord while praising like crazy. Don't make any corrections yet, just make coming to you the most rewarding option. What kind of treats is he most motivated by - we might be able to up the reward value.
