My new lab puppy won't bring the dummy back, just runs around with it
Just got my first bird dog, an 8-week-old black Lab. I'm trying to start some basic retrieving with a canvas dummy in the yard, but he grabs it and then just runs laps instead of coming back to me. I've tried calling him excitedly and even kneeling down to look inviting, but he thinks it's a game of keep-away. Using a 6-foot lead right now.

Totally normal puppy behavior - don't worry! At that age, everything is play. Try shortening the distance dramatically. Sit on the ground, toss the dummy just 2-3 feet in front of you, and gently reel him in with the lead when he picks it up. Keep sessions super short (5 minutes max) and always end with him successfully delivering to hand, even if you have to help. The key is making the return to you the most rewarding part. What kind of reward are you using when he does bring it back - praise, treat, or both?
