My GSP keeps breaking point too early on pheasants - any tips?
I've been hunting with my 2-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer for about a season now, and he's solid on finding birds but tends to break point when they're still 20-30 yards out. I'm using a Beretta A400 with an improved cylinder choke and 1ΒΌ oz #6 shot at 1300 fps. We've done yard work with pigeons, but field birds seem different. Anyone else deal with this?

That's a classic issue with young versatile dogs - they get excited when they finally pin birds after all that searching. What worked for me was using a check cord and planted birds (quail work great) to reinforce the 'whoa' command right at the moment of scent contact. Keep sessions short and positive. Have you tried using a remote trainer like the Dogtra 280C on a low stim setting just to remind him to hold when he starts to creep? Sometimes that subtle vibration is all it takes to reinforce what he already knows in the yard.
