My new lab puppy won't bring back the dummy - just runs around with it
Just got my first bird dog, an 8-week-old black Lab. I've been trying to introduce retrieving with a canvas dummy in the backyard. He'll chase it when I toss it, but then he just prances around with it in his mouth instead of bringing it back to me. I'm using a 20-foot check cord and trying to keep it fun, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. My setup is just basic - dummy, cord, and lots of treats.

Totally normal for a pup that age! Labs are born with the desire to chase and grab, but the 'bring it back' part has to be taught. At 8 weeks, I'd focus way more on building his drive and making it a game - try using two identical dummies. Toss one, let him grab it, then show him the second one and get excited. Most pups will drop the first to come get the second. Praise like crazy when he comes toward you. Keep sessions super short (5 minutes max) and always end on a high note. What kind of dummy are you using - is it one with some scent on it?
