My new Lab puppy won't bring back the dummy - just runs around with it

Just got my first bird dog, a 10-week-old black Lab. I've been trying to introduce retrieving with a canvas dummy in the backyard, but he grabs it and then just runs laps instead of coming back to me. I'm using a 20-foot check cord and trying to keep it fun, but I'm worried I'm teaching him the wrong thing. My hunting buddy says I should start force fetch now, but that seems intense for a puppy.

Totally normal puppy behavior - don't sweat it! At that age, it's all about making it a game. Try shortening the distance dramatically - like 5 feet - and use really high-value treats (I use cut-up hot dogs) when he even looks at the dummy. The key is to get him coming to you before he has time to think about running off. Forget about force fetch for at least 6-8 months - right now you just want him to think retrieving is the most fun thing ever. What kind of treats have you been using, and are you doing this before or after meals when he's more food motivated?
