My new lab puppy won't fetch, just runs off with the dummy
Just got an 8-week-old black lab for duck hunting. When I toss a training dummy, he sprints to it but then runs around the yard with it instead of bringing it back. I've tried calling him and using treats, but he just drops it somewhere else. Using a basic canvas dummy from Cabela's.

Totally normal puppy behavior - don't worry! At that age, they're just exploring the game. Try using a check cord (15-20 ft rope) so you can gently guide him back to you after he picks up the dummy. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes) and end on a positive note. What kind of treats are you using? Sometimes higher value rewards like small pieces of hot dog or cheese work better than kibble.
