Trying to dial in my 20ga for pheasant - what's your go-to choke and load combo?
Been hunting pheasants for two seasons now with my Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus in 20 gauge. I've been using a Modified choke with Federal Premium 3" #5 shot, but I'm getting a lot of cripples at 30-35 yards. The birds are flying but not cleanly taken down. Wondering if I should tighten up the choke or switch to a different shot size.

I ran into the same issue with my 20ga Browning Citori. For pheasants at those ranges, I've had much better luck with an Improved Modified choke and stepping up to #4 shot. The pattern stays dense enough for clean kills but still has some spread for those quick flushes. I'm a big fan of Winchester Super-X 3" #4s - they seem to hit harder at distance. Have you patterned your current setup on paper at 35 yards to see what's happening?
