Hevi-Shot vs. Boss for late-season mallards?
Been hunting flooded timber in Arkansas and the big mallards are decoying well but I'm getting some cripples at 35-40 yards with my current setup. I'm shooting a Benelli SBE3 with a Patternmaster Code Black Goose choke. Been using Federal Black Cloud 3" #2s but thinking about switching to a denser pellet. Anyone have experience comparing Hevi-Shot's Hevi-Metal to Boss' Elites for these longer shots on wary birds?

Good question - I've run both through my A400 Xtreme Plus with that same choke. For your situation, I'd lean toward Boss #3s. The Elites pattern incredibly tight at 40 yards and the smaller shot size gives you more pellets in the pattern while still having plenty of energy for mallards. Hevi-Metal is great too, but I've found it patterns a bit tighter than I want for timber shooting where you need some spread. Have you tried backing off to an IC choke? Might give you better results with either load. What's your pattern looking like at 40 yards?
