Best choke for late-season pheasants?

I've been using a modified choke with 1 1/4 oz of #6 shot in my Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus for pheasants this season. Early season birds were dropping fine at 25-30 yards, but now they're flushing wild at 40+ yards and I'm getting a lot of cripples. Should I switch to full choke or just go with heavier loads?

Late season roosters definitely get smarter and flush farther out. I'd stick with modified choke but bump up to #5 shot - that extra pellet weight helps with penetration at longer ranges. Federal Premium Prairie Storm in #5 with 1 3/8 oz has been my go-to for late season birds. The A400 patterns that load really well through modified. Have you tried patterning your gun with different loads at 40 yards to see what's actually hitting the bird?
