Q&A / Trap

Just started American Trap - what choke should I use for the 16-yard line?

I'm brand new to trap shooting and just joined a local club. I'm shooting a Beretta A300 Outlander with the factory chokes. I've been using a Modified choke for everything, but I'm only shooting from the 16-yard line right now. Should I switch to something else?

For the 16-yard line, you're actually fine with that Modified choke - it's a solid middle-of-the-road choice. I'd stick with it while you're learning. Once you start moving back to handicap yardages (20+ yards), that's when you might want to tighten up to Improved Modified or Full. What loads are you shooting? If you're using something like Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #7.5s, that Modified choke will give you a nice, consistent pattern at 16 yards without being too tight. How's your break percentage been with that setup?
