Q&A / Trap

Struggling with sustained lead on long handicap targets from 27 yards

Been shooting American Trap for about 5 years, just moved back to the 27-yard line and my scores have tanked. I'm using a Browning Citori with a Full choke, shooting 1-1/8 oz of #7.5 shot at 1200 fps. I've always used a pull-away method, but on those long targets, I feel like I'm stopping the gun. Anyone else experience this?

Yeah, that's a classic problem when moving back. At 27 yards, you need a solid 4-5 feet of lead, and pull-away can make you decelerate. Try switching to a sustained lead - pick up the target as it leaves the house, establish your lead immediately, and keep the gun moving smoothly through the shot. What helped me was focusing on my foot position (more open stance) and trusting that the lead is there. Have you tried a slightly faster load, like 1300 fps, to see if it gives you a bit more margin for error?
