Q&A / Trap

Just started American Trap - how much lead should I be giving these targets?

I'm brand new to trap shooting and just joined a local club. I'm shooting a Beretta A300 with a modified choke, using Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 shot at 1200fps. I'm hitting maybe 3-5 out of 25 from the 16-yard line and feel like I'm always shooting behind the birds. How much lead should I be giving these targets at this distance?

Welcome to the sport! For 16-yard American Trap with #8 shot, you're probably looking at 2-3 feet of lead on straightaways and maybe 3-4 feet on hard angles. The key is to maintain that lead through the shot - don't stop your swing when you pull the trigger. Your setup sounds solid, though you might try a tighter choke like full if you're consistently behind. What's your foot position like? Are you keeping your weight forward and following through?
