Q&A / Trap

Just started American Trap - how much lead should I be giving these targets?

I'm brand new to trap shooting and just joined a local club. I've been shooting a Beretta A300 Outlander with a Modified choke, using Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 shot at 1200fps. I'm consistently shooting behind the birds, especially on stations 3, 4, and 5. I've tried swinging through faster but still missing.

Welcome to the sport! That's a super common issue when starting out. For American Trap at 16 yards, you don't need as much lead as you might think - I'd start with about 1-2 feet of sustained lead (just keep the gun moving through the target). On those left and right stations, remember the target is actually angling away from you, so you might need a touch more. Try focusing on your foot position first - make sure you're pointing toward the trap house with your front foot. What's your footwork look like on station 3?
