Q&A / Trap

Struggling with consistency on my 27-yard handicap targets

I've been shooting American Trap for about 2 years and just moved back to the 27-yard line. My scores have dropped from low 90s to mid-70s. I'm using a Browning Citori with a Modified choke, shooting Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 at 1200fps. I feel like I'm seeing the target well but missing behind more often than not.

That's a classic challenge when moving back! At 27 yards, that Modified choke might be a bit tight for #8 shot - you're getting a smaller pattern that demands more precision. Try switching to a Light Modified or Improved Cylinder choke and see if your pattern opens up a bit. Also, at that distance, you might need to increase your lead just a hair more than you think - try consciously holding a bit more target in front of your barrel. What's your foot position like? Sometimes moving your front foot just an inch forward can help with the longer swing needed for handicap targets.
