Q&A / Trap

Just started American Trap - how much lead should I be giving these targets?

Hey all, brand new shooter here. I'm shooting American Trap from the 16-yard line with a Beretta A300 Outlander (28" barrel, IC choke). Using Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 shot. I'm consistently missing behind the birds. I've tried swinging through and pulling the trigger when I think I'm on it, but I'm just dusting the air where the clay was. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the sport! Missing behind is super common when you're starting out - I did the same thing for months. With your setup from the 16-yard line, you're probably looking at 2-3 feet of lead on straightaway targets, more like 3-4 feet on the angles. Try focusing on the target's leading edge instead of the whole clay, and maintain your swing through the shot - don't stop when you pull the trigger. That IC choke is perfect for where you're shooting from. What station are you having the most trouble with? The angles from stations 1 and 5 can really mess with your lead perception at first.
