Q&A / Trap

Just started shooting American Trap - how much lead should I be giving these targets?

I'm brand new to trap and just shot my first round last weekend. I'm using a Beretta A300 Outlander with a Modified choke and Federal Top Gun 1-1/8oz #8 loads. I was missing a lot of targets, especially the hard left and right ones from stations 1 and 5. I think I'm not giving enough lead, but I have no idea how much is right.

Welcome to the sport! That's a super common beginner question. For American Trap at 16 yards, I'd start with about 2-3 feet of lead on those hard-angle targets from stations 1 and 5. With your Modified choke and #8 shot, that setup is perfect for beginners - good pattern density. Try focusing on the target's front edge and maintain that lead through your swing. What kind of misses are you seeing - mostly behind or below?
