Q&A / Trap

Struggling with consistency on my long handicap yardage

Been shooting ATA handicap for about 2 years, and I've moved back to the 25-yard line. My scores have dropped from the 23-24 yard line. I'm using a Browning Citori CX with a Modified choke and 1-1/8 oz of Federal Gold Medal 7.5s at 1200 fps. I feel like I'm seeing the target well, but I'm missing more behind or below lately. Is it just a matter of more lead, or is there something in my setup I should tweak?

That's a common hurdle when you first step back to the 25. A couple things to check: First, with that load and a Modified choke, your pattern might be getting a little thin at 25 yards for consistent breaks. Try stepping up to a Full choke—it'll keep your pattern tighter at that distance. Second, on the lead, at 25 yards you're looking at roughly 4-5 feet of lead on a straightaway. A lot of misses behind at that yardage come from stopping the gun; try focusing on maintaining your swing speed all the way through the shot. What's your foot position like on the station?
