Sig Sauer
Combined Swiss-German firearms manufacturer formed by 1976 merger of Swiss SIG (founded 1853) and German Sauer & Sohn (founded 1751), primarily known for pistols and rifles.
History
SIG founded 1853 in Switzerland as Swiss Wagon Factory by Peyer im Hof, Moser, and Neher. Renamed Swiss Industrial Company (SIG) in 1864 upon receiving rifle contract. Sauer & Sohn founded 1751 in Suhl, Germany by Lorenz Sauer. In 1976 SIG bought Sauer, forming SIG Sauer GmbH in Germany. First shotgun line introduced 1998, designed by B. Rizzini.
