History

Founded in 1814 by James Purdey in London, England, initially locating business on Princes Street. James Purdey born in Whitechapel, East London, was 14 when apprenticed to gunmaker Thomas Keck Hutchinson, his brother-in-law. James completed apprenticeship 1805, skills allowed him to secure job with Joseph Manton, King of Gunmakers at time. Company has been Warrant Holders since 1868. First Royal Warrant came in 1868 as gunmakers to Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. On 28 March 1878 Queen Victoria assigned them her Royal Warrant, as has every British monarch since. Most recently in May 2024 Purdey granted Royal Warrant by King Charles III, continuing over 150 years of service to British Royal Family.
