History

Founded in 1840 when Prussian firearms commissioner Carl Gottlieb Haenel began producing bicycles and weapons as C.G. Haenel, Waffen- und Fahrradfabrik AG. Hugo Schmeisser joined 1921, developed MP28 submachine gun (1928) and MP43/StG 44 assault rifle (WWII). Production ceased 1945 with Russian occupation, recommenced 1946 under Soviet direction, transferred to GDR 1952. Reestablished 2008, belongs to Merkel (Caracal International, UAE). Produces Jaeger shotguns.
